Le Virtuose Lirac 2016 - Guillaume Gonnet Vigneron

Guillaume Gonnet Vigneron

Le Virtuose Lirac 2016

As the name suggests, this is a virtuoso performance.

An unoaked blend of handpicked grapes from old vine Grenache and Syrah, it sings of juicy red and black berries, herbes de Provence, dark chocolate, truffle and the finest Scandinavian liquorice. The relatively small appellation of Lirac is located just across the river from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Too often overlooked due to its more famous neighbour, it offers stunning value for money. This expressive red is a perfect example. Served alongside slow-cooked dishes, rich meaty gravy or mature cheeses, it’s more than a rival to many a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at twice the price.

Guillaume Gonnet and his wife Kelly’s wines all feature a robin – a frequent visitor to their organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards. But don’t think Harvey Nichols has gone colour blind, this duo change the colour of the robin’s breast to distinguish the wines, hence why the little chap on the Lirac is blue. Before taking over his family’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate more than a decade ago, Guillaume travelled the world making wine. It was in Australia that he met Kelly and the pair fell in love over a conversation about terroir. Together they put on quite a show.
