Premium Vegan Wine Collection - Case of Three
Many winemakers use products derived from animals to fine or clean their wines, such as egg whites, casein (a protein from milk), gelatine and chitin (a fibrous substance from the shells of crustacea). So, Harvey Nichols has curated the Premium Vegan Wine Collection. These wines can be enjoyed by anyone, consider them the wine equivalent to avocados, hummus and peanut butter, they’re awesome, everybody loves them, and they just so happen to be free of animal products.
First up we have an English Sparkling Wine from Busi Jacobsohn. Their very first white sparkling wine was awarded a massive 94 points by the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020. Here, we’ve included their very first rosé sparkling wine. This Champagne-method superstar was made by an Italian and Swedish couple in East Sussex, and we love it because this progressive producer clearly marks that their wine is suitable for vegans on the back label. What pours from the strikingly designed bottle is a stunning coral-coloured fizz that tastes like a future classic. Be dazzled by its combination of redcurrant, pink grapefruit, cherry blossom, raspberry sorbet, wild strawberry, pink oyster mushroom, shortbread and piecrust flavours.
Next up, we have our latest crush, Florão Branco from Quinta da Fonte Souto in Portugal. From the 2019 vintage, this producer turned all their wines vegan friendly, which demonstrates the momentum this movement is gathering. Bursting with lime peel, grapefruit, greengage, peach, dried herbs, wildflowers and spices, this blend of Arinto and Verdelho and it tastes like Mâcon meets Chablis with a splash of Vinho Verde.
And last, but possibly most importantly, we have Querciabella Chianti Classico, a silky smooth and incredibly refined treat described by Antonio Galloni as “classy, polished and exceptionally beautiful.” He concludes: “the Chianti Classico is aromatic and gracious in feel, more finesse than power. Silky tannins wrap around a core of bright Sangiovese fruit. From start to finish, the 2018 is all class.” Querciabella is one of only two wineries that we know of that’s actually owned by a vegan, in this case Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni. This truly remarkable man is not only an award-winning entrepreneur, passionate vegan, animal rights activist and climate change campaigner, but he also sits on the board of Sea Shepherd, advises the International Anti-Poaching Foundation in Zimbabwe and invests in cutting-edge food like Beyond Meat and Vurger Co. Querciabella is as far as we know, the world’s only cruelty-free biodynamic winery. Organic since 1988, shortly after they decided to go biodynamic. What makes them unique is that they’ve eschewed the spiritual aspects and the use of animal organs, skulls and horns adopted by most practitioners. So, as you sip Querciabella’s exceptional fine wines, rest easy that no animal products or by-products have been used in any step of the farming or winemaking process.
The biggest thing most people can do to help the Climate Crisis is to embark on a more plant-based diet. Of course, we’re not saying that this case of wine will save the world, but we all have to start somewhere. Cheers to the future.
