Autumn Reds - Case of Three
Autumn is here and as the nights draw in and the leaves turn to from lush green to burnt sienna, yellow ochre and brick red, so our minds turn towards comfort food, hunkering down and something a little more robust on the wine front…
Our Autumn Reds case has been carefully curated for the season. Not the big winter warmers like Argentinian Malbec and Australian Shiraz, but something a little lighter, earthier and crunchier. Think plum crumble in vinous format. The selection kicks off with a dramatic new venture from Angelo Gaja (Barbaresco’s greatest producer) on Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna. Hailing from a region that’s very much en vogue at the moment, IDDA 2018 is the second vintage of a wine that will inevitably draw comparison to the finest Pinot Noir from Burgundy. Next up, there’s a “very stylish” Crianza from Ribera del Duero “with good ageing potential”, according to Dr Jamie Goode of WineAnorak.com. Tinto Pesquera began making wine when the only other local winery of note was Vega Sicilia and the region didn’t even have a Denominación de Origen classification yet. When Robert Parker compared Tinto Pesquera to Château Pétrus, the world took notice, and it has been an icon of Ribera del Duero ever since. And rounding out the bunch we have a gorgeous red from Thistledown Wines, a winery leading the contemporary Grenache movement in Australia. With fewer than 3,000 bottles of The Vagabond made and massive scores of 96 points from James Suckling and 95 points from James Halliday’s Wine Companion, it’s becoming very hard to come by. Anybody else fancying a Sunday roast right about now?
