British Isles Whisky Collection Hamper
Smooth, charming and unbelievably rare. Remind you of anyone?
This connoisseur’s collection is an unbelievable gift for any occasion. Available nowhere else, this wicker hamper contains three exceptional whiskies from around the British Isles and three perfectly designed Glencairn glasses to sip them from.
Let’s start with ‘smooth’. That accolade goes to The Singleton of Dufftown 18 Year Old Singly Malt Scotch Whisky. This super-smooth dram tastes like the greatest hits of the dessert menu combined with the comfort of a country pub on an autumn evening. Think liquified hazelnut praline, walnut baklava, crème brûlée, sticky toffee pudding, apple tart, poire belle Hélène, almond biscotti, rhubarb crumble, cocoa-dusted truffles and red berries scattered with mint leaves, all served up next to a crackling fireplace that fills the senses with warmth and a gentle woodsmoke.
Next up is ‘charming’. For that we’ve chosen the intriguing Green Spot Château Léoville Barton Cask Finished Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Mitchell & Son have taken their much-loved whiskey and finished it in red wine casks from the famous Second Growth Saint-Julien estate, Château Léoville Barton. Interestingly, this Bordeaux winery was purchased by Irishman Hugh Barton in 1826 and is still run by his descendants. Therefore, this whiskey brings together two legendary Irish families. Expect raspberry, strawberry redcurrant, blackcurrant, plum, brambles, baked apple, greengage jam, Greek olive oil, crème caramel, brandy snaps, ginger biscuits, oaky spices, rose harissa and a dramatic whiskey that thoroughly deserves the 96 points and “Extraordinary Ultimate Recommendation” it received at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge 2017.
Finally, there’s ‘unbelievably rare’. Bottled exclusively for us, Harvey Nichols Peated Burgundy Cask Single Barrel English Whisky is a smoky 10 Year Old. It was made in East Anglia under the watchful eye of Iain Henderson, a legendary Master Distiller who worked at Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Rather than just being finished in red wine casks, this was fully matured in a 250-litre, first-fill, Pinot Noir cask from Burgundy. It yielded just 280 bottles, and only a handful remain. It reminds us of toasted nuts, sesame seeds, dried fruit, Christmassy spices, dark chocolate, earthy smoked chillies, cherry chocolate liqueurs, summer pudding, lapsang souchong, leather bound books, smoked paprika, freshly brewed coffee, and something that evokes sipping malty Horlicks around a bonfire on a winter night.
Visit any great distillery and you will undoubtedly find a tasting room full of Glencairn glasses. First launched in 2001, this iconic receptacle is considered by most to be the perfect drinking vessel for whisky, a view firmly upheld by a Queen’s Award for Innovation and an endorsement from the Scotch Whisky Association. The Glencairn Wee Whisky Glass is a mini version that fits comfortably in the hand, the wide crystal bowl allows an impeccable appreciation of the colour, the tapered shape focusses the aromatics, the shape allows you to swirl easily without spillage, and the heavy base provides a reassuring stability despite its diminutive size. Drink from one of these and it’s not hard to see why this family business sells over three million Glencairn glasses each year.
