As cool and flinty as a château in the Loire this perfect Pouilly-Fumé hails from the world-famous Famille Bourgeois’ vineyards in the chalky hills at the heart of the appellation. Its smokiness is fabuleux with serious fish like turbot or goat and sheep cheese.
Part of our limited-edition Premium Range the Harvey Nichols Pouilly-Fumé was crafted at Domaine Henri Bourgeois the very same critically acclaimed producer who created our much-loved Sancerre. The chalky-clay hills around Saint-Andelain and Saint-Martin-sur-Nohain where this comes from have been producing stunning wines since Roman times. The hard calcareous rock of the local terroir seems to magically impart a flinty finesse and gentle smoke to the Sauvignon Blanc grown on it. Five months of maturation on the fine lees (the spent yeast left behind after fermentation has ceased) adds a stylish texture to our concentrated classic. Expect white peach melon gooseberry pear citrus sorbet and an elegant minerality suggestive of a pinch of smoke sea salt. We love it paired with fish shellfish or practically any salads or greens that have been sprinkled with crumbled feta or toasted sesame seeds. The only bad news is that we created a limited run of just 2 400 bottles which probably won’t hang around for long if the popularity of our Sancerre is anything to go by.
According to the respected wine expert Dr Jamie Goode of WineAnorak.com Henri Bourgeois “is one of those producers that any wine region would be lucky to have.” Based in the beautiful village of Chavignol it’s one of the region’s leading estates and has been family run for ten generations.
