Riede Kulm Blaufränkisch 2017
Heidi Schröck’s wines from the small Medieval town of Rust in Austria have garnered a cult following in the USA (in no small part due their popularity with Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker) and throughout Scandinavia. Sustainably farming ten hectares planted with a wide variety of heirloom varieties (with a little help from her sons Johannes and Georg) near the border with Hungary, this pioneering winemaker is producing some of Europe’s most vibrant and exciting wines. And this Blaufränkisch is a particular favourite of our Wine Buyer.
The Kulm vineyard – the oldest of Heidi Schröck’s plots – was planted by her great aunts Emma, Irma and Milli in 1955. The small but highly concentrated berries create a lively, vegan-friendly red brimming with red forest berries and cracked black pepper. And it’s one that we could drink all day long with game, goulash, lecsó, comfort food, fresh tomato sauces, gnocchi, braised red cabbage, schnitzel or smoked sausage. Heidi Schröck rocks and there’s no hiding it.
