10 Year Old Verdelho Madeira 500ml
Renowned for the exceptional quality, depth of flavour and great value for money their wines offer, Henriques & Henriques is one of Madeira’s leading producers. This particular release is produced solely from the grape variety Verdelho and has been aged in oak for a minimum of 10 years before release. Medium-bodied, off-dry and hugely complex, this wine displays marmalade, walnut, pears, pecan pie, smoke, caramel, toasted nuts, wood, pine needles and mince pies. Impeccably balanced by its crisp acidity, then there’s that long-lived finish that just seems to go on for days. A simply delicious example of aged Verdelho Madeira, this would pair well with a nutty, chocolaty or festive desserts, but also makes a great accompaniment to savoury dishes like cheeseboards, pâté and soup. It also makes a delightful aperitif with some salted nuts.
Madeira is made by heating and cooling the wine over an extended ageing period to recreate the voyages wines of old took aboard ships. This process renders them almost indestructible; once you’ve opened this bottle, it won’t fade or sour like a standard wine, Port or Sherry might. That means that this Verdelho is also a great wine to have on hand for fortifying stocks, sauces and gravy.
Founded in 1850 by João Gonçalves Henriques, his two sons took over in 1912 and this world famous Madeira house became Henriques & Henriques as we know it today. Madeira has enjoyed a strong bond with the United Kingdom since King Charles II married Princess Catherine of Portugal, but Henriques & Henriques’ is particularly enviable. You’ll find them near the picturesque fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, famously painted by Winston Churchill. They’ve also seen their wine served at a Buckingham Palace for a banquet attended by The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, not to mention William and Kate, Charles and Camilla, Prince Harry and the Prime Minister. They’re the only Madeira house to own vineyards, one of the few whose wines are vegan-friendly and in 2017 were named “Best Fortified Wine Producer of the Year” by Revista de Vinhos Magazine – a considerable feat considering they were up against not only Madeira’s famous wineries Blandy’s and Barbeito, but also all the great producers of Port.
Madeira is one of the most fascinating and underestimated wines on the planet. A visit to this tiny Portuguese island – closer to Morocco than Europe – reveals a dizzying array of styles, a quite frankly crazy history, and feats of engineering that make the mind boggle.
