Keyneton Euphonium 2015

Tasting Notes
95 points, “Fresh, pungent, purple blackberry fruit dominates the nose, then deeper tar, liquorice, cassis and molasses sweetens before the Eden Valley Shiraz signatures of sage and bay leaf add verve. Very complex. The palate dries to a bony savouriness – a nod to the strength and muscle of Keyneton Shiraz, putting added steel into the structure of this wine. A taut acid line and sturdy yet understated tannins keep the flavours bright and long, through to a soft finish. Such measured power and drive suggests a long life in the cellar.” – Decanter
A phenomenal blend of Shiraz (from 50-year-old vines), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grown in Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, matured in French oak for 18 months before bottling. Keyneton Euphonium is a dark melange of cassis, blackberry, sage, bay leaf, vanilla, cedar and black pepper that has Sunday roast written all over it.
The Henschke winery is based in Keyneton, named after the pioneering pastoralist Joseph Keynes. This village became a hub for music and culture, becoming home to the Henschke Family Brass Band, which was founded in 1888. The band featured many instruments including the cornet and the clarinet amongst others, but the family’s favourite was the B flat euphonium, hence the name of this wine. Like its namesake, this wine shines, reverberates and is laced with history.
The Henschke family have been making wine in Australia’s Eden Valley since 1868. From the biodynamically farmed Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone vineyards, Stephen and Prue Henschke create two of Australia’s most sought-after wines. The vines used to make their masterpiece, Hill of Grace, were planted in 1860, and the wine itself is one of the very best in the world.
