While many in the whisky world seem to be moving away from age statements, Johnnie Walker keep walking a different path by rebranding their much-loved Platinum as the Ultimate 18 Year Old. Johnnie Walker’s wonderfully named Master Blender, Dr Jim Beveridge, has united up to 18 different whiskies, all of which have been aged for at least 18 long years.

It has already picked up an “outstanding” Silver Medal at the international Wine & Spirit Competition 2017, with the expert judges describing it as follows: “A fantastic balance of fruit and spice. Peach melba stacked with rich Madagascan vanilla ice-cream and whipping cream. Refreshing ripe melon makes an appearance just to seal the deal.”
Harvey Nichols poured a good measure into a heavy tumbler and discovered freshly peeled tangerine, granola, salted butter, dark chocolate-covered almonds, a touch of brine and something that reminded us of toasting crumpets on a gently smoking fire. This is an Ultimate 18 Year Old.
