Heathcote Shiraz 2014
For forty years James Halliday has been Australian wine’s leading critic with his annual Wine Companion becoming an oracle on the subject. The mind boggles when you think of just how many wines he and his team must have tasted. So when this book scores a wine at 96 points and praises its intensity and elegance, you know it’s worth very serious consideration…
Although famed for his Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Damian North’s Journey Wines created an absolutely belting Shiraz in 2014. Very much a cool-climate style – think more Rhône valley than Aussie blockbuster – the wine has a medium body but a full-throttle mixed spice, ripe plums, blackberry jam, tangy raspberries, violets, liquorice and white pepper. The Heathcote Shiraz has a restless energy, it almost seems to shape-shift on your tongue. It’s a journey that you never want to end.
Damian North started his career as a sommelier in Sydney, but quickly realised that he wanted to make the wine himself. After studying oenology, he worked at various wineries from the Yarra Valley to Oregon, but really made his name at the world famous Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River. But his dream was always to make his own wines, so he moved back to Yarra Valley. His wine labels feature linocut prints depicting Damian’s story. And the journey continues…
