Black Label Pinotage 2016 - KANONKOP

Black Label Pinotage 2016

95 points, “Only 3,500 bottles are made, which seems a shame as it's arguably the prime example of what Pinotage can achieve, not just in South Africa but anywhere in the world.” – Decanter Magazine

Pinotage is a grape that sometimes gets a bad press, but Kanonkop’s Black Label 2016 received 96 points from Master of Wine Tim Atkin and five stars from Platter’s Wine Guide, on top of which it was described by Vinous’ respected critic Neal Martin as “a gorgeous Pinotage (no oxymoron!) that really demonstrates what this grape variety can do in the right hands.” So if you want to taste probably the finest examples of Pinotage on the planet, then this is it.

The year after this wine was made the International Wine & Spirit Competition named Kanonkop South African Producer of the Year and International Winemaker of the Year, and it’s not hard to see why. Made in tiny quantities from 65-year-old bush vines, the Black Label Pinotage is a dense and powerful wine that will improve over many decades. Rich with blackcurrant, red cherries, wild strawberries, black plums, spiced dark chocolate, vanilla and mint, but with the elegance of a fine Pinot Noir. It’s a phenomenal wine that is calling out for spicy Asian or Mexican dishes – think hoisin duck, Korean barbeque or a rich chocolaty mole.

Kanonkop takes its name from a hillock, from which a large cannon was fired to alert local farmers that ships from Europe and the Far East were arriving into Cape Town. The winery has been passed down through four generations of the same family and is now run by Paul and Johann Krige. Famed for its Pinotage, Stellenbosch’s Kanonkop is considered by many to be South Africa’s equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth.
