Organic Pinot Blanc 2020
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Kelly Washington decided to focus on very small volume wines from extraordinary parcels of fruit. This boutique Organic Pinot Blanc from the Rapaura Vineyard in Marlborough is one of the new creations. However, very little was made, so blink and you might miss out.
Kelly Washington’s Organic Pinot Blanc is elegant, energetic, vibrant, sweeping and completely mesmerising, like watching swifts catching insects in a summer sky. Fermented in cement egg-shaped vessels and a couple of French oak barriques using native yeasts, it was then aged in the cement eggs on the lees (the spent yeast) for nine months. This created a wonderfully fleshy and bone-dry white wine with a delightful roundedness and impressive concentration, as well as ripe autumn fruits, blossom and delicious savoury character. Consider pairing with crab cakes, trout, sauces laced with tarragon, croque monsieur, Jerusalem artichoke soup, French onion soup, savoury caramelised onion cheesecake, asparagus or endive.
We knew we were going to love this new venture as soon as we found out that the winemaker, Tamra Kelly-Washington, had grown up in Marlborough (during the region’s explosion) and started her career at the incredible Seresin Estate. What a place to cut one’s teeth. Following that she headed to the USA, Australia and Italy to hone her skills, then back to New Zealand, spending ten years at Yealands Estate and eventually returning to Seresin. Now she and her husband, Simon, have launched a new enterprise called Kelly Washington. They work with trusted growers who have old vines and high-altitude vineyards, and, crucially, ones that farm sustainably, organically or biodynamically. Together they create wonderfully balanced wines with a real sense of provenance, sophisticatedly packaged in a way that makes you want to buy them all and line them up in a display.
