Gran Reserva 890 Rioja 2005
98 points, “One of the greatest ever? The new 1964?” – James Suckling
Only produced a handful of times each decade, the 2005 vintage of La Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva 890 also received 98 point scores from Tim Atkin and Guía Peñín – Spain’s leading wine guide. On tasting it, Jancis Robinson said: “Bless those Spaniards for ageing their wines for us so much longer than the Bordelais.” As the next vintage to be released will be the 2010, it will be a while before you see another Gran Reserva 890, so it’s worth stocking up now.
This blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo was fermented with indigenous years and aged for six years in 199 oak barrels. It has spent the convening years maturing in the bottle and now simmers with wild strawberry, earth mushroom, rich game, crushed bricks, raisins, tobacco and autumn leaves. 2005 was officially rated as an ‘Excellent’ vintage in Rioja, and this will be one of its finest wines.
Formed in 1890 by several families, La Rioja Alta sets the benchmark for the entire Rioja region. They're famed for their classic Spanish reds, which are aged for an inordinately long time. Gran Reserva 890 is named after the year the winery was opened.
