95 points, “2010 was a ‘spectacular year’, according to Julio Sáenz, and who am I to disagree?” – Tim Atkin MW
95 points, “2010 was a great vintage in Rioja in general and seems to be exceptional here… A great Viña Ardanza!” – Wine Advocate
18+ points, “Pure traditional Rioja that's already giving pleasure but, on the basis of past performance, this is only at the start of a glorious life.” – Jancis Robinson MW
This is an extra-special bottle for so many reasons. Firstly, just look at the critical acclaim. Secondly, La Rioja Alta reserve the moniker ‘Selección Especial’ for only the very best vintages. Only 2001, 1973 and 1964 were bestowed the same title as this 2010 in the company’s 77-year-long history. And finally, La Rioja Alta bottle most of their wines in standard sizes, making half bottles like this a rarity.
In this cool vintage the wine is silky smooth, wonderfully aromatic and extremely polished. Displaying dried cherries, wild strawberries, forest brambles, antique furniture, smoke, treacle tart, cinnamon, vanilla cream and savoury notes of roast beef gravy and balsamic; Viña Ardanza Rioja Reserva Selección Especial 2010 is simply magical stuff. And at its price point, it’s hard to disagree with the following assertions from the critics:
“Viña Ardanza from La Rioja Alta is one of Rioja’s great value wines.” – Jamie Goode
“Viña Ardanza Reserva from La Rioja Alta is no secret, and its reputation precedes it, yet its price remains entirely affordable – especially compared with equivalent-scoring reds from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, California, Australia et al.” – Richard Hemming MW
Formed in 1890 by three families – the Ardanzas, the Aranas and the Alberdis – La Rioja Alta sets the benchmark for the entire Rioja region. They're famed for their classic Spanish reds, which are aged for an inordinately long time in American oak barrels lovingly made by their own cooper. This wonderfully traditional producer still carries out its racking (the process of moving wine between barrels to remove the sediment) by hand and candlelight, the old-school way. The style of the wine dedicated to the Ardanza family is softer than most Rioja, influenced more by Burgundy than by Bordeaux, as the bottle shape suggests. This makes it quite unique and this half bottle is a fantastic introduction for any lover of Spanish wine.
