28 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky
After a stunning run of form in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, to call this limited edition release from Laphroaig highly anticipated would be an understatement…
Laphroaig 28 Year Old spent all but one year of its ripe old age maturing and building character in a range of different woods, including ex-Bourbon barrels, Oloroso butts and the distillery’s much-loved Quarter Casks. These components were then married together in sherry casks for twelve months before being bottled in 2018. The result is more complicated than the weekend cryptic crossword; there are honey, dates and a spice combination of tagine, festive notes of Christmas cake fruit and chestnuts, plus poached pear, vanilla pod, leathery oak-smoked biltong, black pepper, wood-fired barbeques, Scottish heather and of course Laphroaig’s benchmark medicinal character. This Islay dram is one to take your time over and lovingly unpick the complex flavour combinations.
Pronounced ‘la-froyg’, this distillery is famed for its unashamedly peaty, powerful and uncompromising style, which has made it one of the most iconic names in the world of whisky. Its Distillery Manager John Campbell – who was born a mile and a half from Laphroaig and has occupied practically every role at the distillery at some point – never puts a foot wrong in our opinion.
