25 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2018 Release
After a stunning run of form in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, there’s huge expectations each time Laphroaig steps up to the plate with a new release. But they’ve smashed it out of the park again with the latest cask strength 25 Year Old.
Distilled before the boom in popularity of Islay whisky, back when many of the distilleries on the island were really struggling, this is truly a whisky from another era. All of Laphroaig’s fiery character is there, but a quarter of a decade in ex-Bourbon casks has added a new depth and a rare creaminess. So expect all that seaweed, log fire, tar, machine oil, leather, rubber galoshes, TCP and crashing waves that will transport you to a remote Scottish fishing village, but also be prepared for a creamy flat white, barley sugars, peppercorns, lemon posset, proving pizza dough and dried fruit drizzled with honey. In short, this is a dream dram.
Pronounced ‘la-froyg’, this distillery is famed for its unashamedly peaty, powerful and uncompromising style, which has made it one of the most iconic names in the world of whisky. Its Distillery Manager John Campbell – who was born a mile and a half from Laphroaig, received his first taste of Islay whisky as a teething baby and gave up a career as a lobster fisherman to work his way up through almost every role at the distillery – never puts a foot wrong in our opinion. There’s much talk of expansion at Laphroaig, and although we trust John wholeheartedly, there will be inevitable changes. That makes rare malts like this even more important.
