Mâcon Chardonnay La Cadole á Marcel 2016
It stands to reason that if you want a good Chardonnay, buy it from a Chardonnay expert who grows only that grape variety near the village of Chardonnay. Farmed almost entirely organically and crafted without oak, La Cadole á Marcel 2016 offers remarkable value for money. Crisp and citrusy with enticing summery floral notes, mint and gently roasted apricots and peaches. An ideal aperitif or accompaniment to summer salads, simple fish dishes, or a pea and asparagus risotto.
A ‘cadole’ is a rustic old stone hut. The vineyards in the Mâconnais are studded with them. Although many wineries tear them down to make space for more vines, Les Cadoles de Chardonnay restore and maintain these ancient dwellings in homage to the history of the region. This wine is particularly special as it refers to Marcel, who set the family this task. He inherited a cadole from his father-in-law and this remarkable piece of engineering contained a well to an underground river, the water from which has been used to water shoots and mix treatments for the vineyards in this are for many years. The grapes come from three parcels, en Nécuge, La Luquette and La Roche – the latter being a reference to the quarry where the stone came from to build the houses in the village and probably the cadole that set Nicholas and Patrick Laugere down this path.
