18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2019 Release

This limited-edition 2019 Release is stately and majestic. So much so that someone should get it a crown, a sceptre and a robe from Ede & Ravenscroft. Then all the other peated whiskies could gather around and kneel before it singing God Save the Longrow 18 Year Old.

The annual release is always highly anticipated and as a result the 4,000-odd bottles created disappear almost instantaneously. This year’s has been aged in 75% Sherry casks and 25% Bourbon casks, creating a rich and smoky Scotch. Imagine a hurricane that starts off over Scotland picking up tablet, heather, peat, smokehouses, sea spray and fishing villages. Next stop is an old school sweet shop, out of which it whips nougat, liquorice, lemon sherbets, cherry liqueurs and clotted cream fudge. Then it spins off towards the Caribbean sucking up coffee beans, Cuba cigars, chocolate, allspice and beach campfires. All of which it deposits into you glass. This storm in a whisky glass is sure to blow you away.

Springbank is one of those glorious distilleries that sits quietly on the peripheries of the scene but occupies a special place in the heart of true whisky connoisseurs, a bit like Clynelish and Rosebank. Once home to some thirty distilleries, Campbeltown was a major player in the world of whisky. However, most of them have long since gone out of business, and now only around four remain. The most famous is Springbank, who also produce the peated Longrow and the triple-distilled Hazelburn. Established in 1828, it’s one of the few Scottish distilleries that has remained in the hands of the founding family, J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd. They also run two of the other distilleries in the region: Glengyle and Kilkerran. So really, without that first illicit still set up by Archibald Mitchell and the spirit kept alive by his ancestors, there would probably be no whisky from Campbeltown and Scotch would be all the poorer for it.
