This wine hails from the extraordinary year in which the Champagne region was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The experts at Wine Searcher described the vintage quality of 2015 as “legendary”, which feels like a fitting way to mark such a monumental occasion. However, although the dry weather resulted in excellent ripeness, the yields were lower than average, so don’t expect these bottles to hang around for long.

Louis Roederer’s 2015 is an absolute revelation. The Pinot Noir for this wine came from low-yielding vines in the Grand Cru of Verzy, while the 30% Chardonnay was picked from another Grand Cru village, Chouilly. Partially fermented in oak and aged for five years in the bottle, this is everything you would expect from one of the greatest Champagne houses, and more.

Rich, powerful and incredibly energetic, the nose buzzes with redcurrant, mirabelle plum, creamy peach yoghurt, smoke, citrus, peppery gingerbread, citrus zest and dried fruit. The palate of this gastronomic and elegant wine is just as complex, displaying more of the same, plus chocolate, roasted nuts, apricot crumble, piecrust, sea salt and a perfect balance of freshness, concentration and maturity. We love Louis Roederer in every vintage, but this is something very special.

Founded in 1776 and famed for being the producers of Cristal, Louis Roederer is one of the last major Champagne houses to still be independently family-run. It falls under the stewardship of the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Domaines Ott, Champagne Deutz, Ramos Pinto Port, Merry Edwards and Diamond Creek in the USA, Maison Delas in the Rhône and Bordeaux’s iconic Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.
