Mülheimer Sonnenlay Zeppelin Riesling 2018 - Max Ferdinand Richter

Mülheimer Sonnenlay Zeppelin Riesling 2018

If you find your wine choices keep going down like a lead zeppelin, then buy a bottle of this off-dry Riesling. You’re sure to get a whole lotta love for it.

Sonnenlay translates as ‘sunshine and slate’, referencing the classic Mosel terroir and the exposure this sunny vineyard in Mülheim receives. The wines from this world-famous plot in the Mosel Valley were served in the luxurious restaurants aboard the airships Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg during the 20s and 30s. So proud of this achievement, the locally commissioned a commemorative label by Hans Schlösser – a local artist heavily involved in the Bauhaus movement. His wonderful Art Deco-style label is still used today.

Max Ferdinand Richter described 2018 as “a vintage to be remembered” on account of the “perfect season”, and expectations are high from the wine critics and press. This off-dry Riesling fully delivers on all that hype, with crisp green apple, tangy grapefruit, lemon zest, dried herbs, the freshness of sea spray whipped up off a pebble beach, and maybe just a hint of the smoke billowing from the great engines that powered the mighty Zeppelins.

Max Ferdinand Richter is known for picking later than many of their neighbours, so their wines have a rich and unctuous style. And with 300 years of experience, they’re absolute masters of their art. Serve the dramatic and energetic Mülheimer Sonnenlay Zeppelin Riesling with spicy food – think creamy Vietnamese curry, kimchi, pad thai, nasi goreng or Indian dishes from Goa or Kerala – the touch of sweetness and bright flavours will work perfectly. But its refreshing acidity also makes it a great match for fatty meat and fish dishes such as sausages, duck, unagi, smoked salmon or trout with a creamy sauce. Amongst all that meat, it's worth noting that Max Ferdinand Richter's wines are all suitable for vegans too, and it's hard to think of many vegetable dishes it wouldn't match. Zeppelin is so food friendly, whatever you serve it with you’ll be flying high.
