Grab a glass and a corkscrew it’s time for a viticultural masterpiece. Based in the Yarra Valley in the Australian state of Victoria Mac Forbes started his solo adventure in 2004 after a stint with some big names in Europe. He’s a man obsessed with the unique environment of each and every one of his cool-climate vineyard sites. So a lot of emphasis is put on understanding the land and carrying out all the tasks at the best possible time with respect to not only the season but also the site block row and individual vine. This has seen one of Australia’s most respected critics James Halliday describe Mac’s wines as having a “clarity finesse and tension born of philosophy and of place.”
The EB22 Tradition Riesling comes from a vineyard in Strathbogie Ranges that was studded with such huge granite boulders that when they planted the vines in 1983 they had work around these giant rocks. Normally when making Riesling the juice would be pressed and removed from the skins pretty quickly. Here Mac Forbes has fermented the juice with the skins and left the skins there for several months to add texture. What this has done is add a whole new dimension to this Riesling. Expect the prickle of ginger ale crunchy nectarine flint lime dried herbs and flavours of honey roasted nuts rose and cardamom – rather like baklava with the sweetness sucked out of it. We love how this wine is developing with a bit of bottle age. Definitely one for adventurous orange wine fans.
