Edition No. 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky
The much anticipated fourth release in Macallan’s annual series that analyses individual aspects of the whisky making process in minute detail. This time it’s all about the structure…
Inspired by the architectural delights of their new £140million, grass-topped distillery – and of course the weight and gravitas of their own Single Malts – this new limited edition from Macallan explores structure. Almost as intricate as their new home, the construction of this Speyside whisky uses seven different kinds of cask: first-fill and refill, hogsheads, butts and puncheons, and both European and American oak. They’ve used barrels from Sherry producers Vasyma and Jose y Miguel Martin, and cooperages Diego Martin Rosado and Tevasa. So as you can imagine, it’s pretty complex, offering up thick-cut marmalade, lemon curd, heather honey, fig jam, cocoa, roasted coffee, dark chocolate Hob Nobs, toffee, tarte tatin, sandalwood, freshly sanded floorboards, nutmeg, clove, ginger and vanilla. Whereas the new distillery has been designed to blend in with its environment, Master Distiller Nick Savage has created a new whisky that stands out from the crowd for its smooth and savoury structure.
“Macallan is the daddy, as far as legendary whiskies go,” so says whisky expert Ian Buxton. This Speyside behemoth enjoys huge global demand, perfectly illustrated by a 30-year-old cask breaking auction records when it sold for $375,000 (US) in Hong Kong. Deservedly so, it remains the aficionado’s choice when it comes to Scotch.
