Obsidian Tequila Vessels by Frida Escobedo for Maestro Dobel
This limited-edition collection of hand-carved obsidian vessels offers the ultimate Tequila drinking experience. A collaboration between the game-changingly smooth Maestro Dobel and the pioneering Mexican architect Frida Escobedo, they’re a celebration of craftsmanship, terroir and Mexican culture. Only 30 sets have been created, ten of which will go to top bars and restaurants such as Nobu and the Mandarin Oriental. But the only opportunity to own them yourself will be through us.
Contained within the elegantly embossed black box you’ll discover three vessels sculpted from obsidian – a naturally occurring glass created in the cooling lava that flows from volcanoes. Mexico is located in the “ring of fire” – a horseshoe-shaped region of volcanic and seismic activity that stretches around the Pacific Ocean from New Zealand to the tip of South America. As a result, the agave fields around Tequila are filled with obsidian, which has been carved by stone artist Juan Fraga into a tactile trio of Tequila vessels that speak of the spirit’s birthplace.
Frida Escobedo took her inspiration for the design from jícara – a cup made from the fruit of the calabash tree traditionally used to drink Tequila. But the perfectly spherical design also pays homage to the pits used for roasting agave hearts, the traditional Mexican pestle and mortar used for making salsas called a molcajete, corn tortillas, and the craters of volcanoes. The vessels come in three sizes and colours. A black obsidian with gold nuances has been used for the large 9oz bowl, which is perfect for long cocktails. The middle-sized cup has been shaped from translucent grey obsidian and is ideal for Margaritas. And finally, the smallest has been fashioned from rare red obsidian and can be used for sipping the finest Tequila neat. Exclusive to Harvey Nichols, they’re a delight to gaze upon, to hold and drink from.
Frida Escobedo is the youngest architect to receive the prestigious commission to design the Serpentine Pavilion. Her stylish construction of wave shaped concrete roof tiles featuring a pool for reflecting the sky and a roof aligned with the Greenwich Meridian was unveiled in June 2018. Despite being based in Mexico City, where her Architecture Workshop design everything from public buildings to furniture, Frida Escobedo was named one of London’s most influential architects by London Evening Standard, and has also been named an International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Maestro Dobel was created by Juan-Domingo Beckmann Legoretta, whose family have been the leaders of José Cuervo for many, many generations. So this man, nicknamed Dobel, knows his Tequila. Alongside Master Distillers Marco Anguiano and Luis Yerenas, Dobel is blending single estate spirits made in small batches with a focus on refinement. Despite being a relatively young enterprise, their super smooth Tequilas are revolutionising the premium Mexican spirit category.
