Rioja Reserva 2015
95 points, “Fresh, serious, stylish and well balanced, this is a delightful 2015, with no sign of the heat of the vintage.” – Tim Atkin
93 points, “It's a ripe and powerful vintage.” – Wine Advocate
93 points, “I love the velvety texture of the long, intense finish.” – James Suckling
This Tempranillo-dominated Rioja comes highly rated by Tim Atkin and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, James Suckling. 2015 was a warm year, so Marqués de Murrieta have upped the Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan) in the blend, giving it great balance and finesse. What is drawn from the American oak barrels after 18 months of maturing is pumped full of plum, cherry, blackberry, spice, liquorice, sweet balsamic, smoke and something reminiscent of great Bourbon. Pair this silky red with roast lamb, seared duck breast, jamón, roasted vegetables, truffles, slow-cooked mushrooms and caramelised onions.
Luciano Murrieta produced the first ever Rioja, exported before anyone else in the region, and built a grand “château” on the Ygay Estate, inspired by Bordeaux. The wines from this estate are aged for substantially longer than the required legal period, meaning it therefore sits at the very pinnacle of the region’s hierarchy. In fact, when Tim Atkin ranked the producers of Rioja based “only on the quality of the winery and its wines”, he placed Marqués de Murrieta in the very top echelon as a First Growth.
