Pinot Noir 2017
Meerlust constantly amazes us. Their ability to produce exceptional wines in both a Bordeaux- and Burgundy-style is uncanny. Their 2017 Pinot Noir easily rivals many Premier Crus from the Côte de Nuits.
We’re not alone in our love of this wine. American wine critic James Suckling says it is “always a favourite of mine,” and Saturday Kitchen regular Peter Richards has said that previous vintages reminded him of the “simple, life-affirming pleasures that wine can give,” noting also that “it will be well worth buying a few to lay down – and a few to drink.” We couldn’t agree more. Winemaker Chris Williams has excelled with his thirteenth vintage of this wine. Consider pairing its strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant, red cherry, porcini mushroom and musky, earthy flavours with the likes of seared duck breast, grilled tuna steaks, wild mushrooms in almost any format, or simply Parma or Iberico ham.
The Myburgh family has been making wine at Meerlust Estate for eight generations stretching back to 1756. And to think that some people call this the New World! Drive up the long, palm tree-lined driveway and you’ll discover the iconic white manor house atop a granite outcrop 5km from False Bay. The hot vineyards are cooled by the refreshing ocean breezes, helping the Myburghs to create wines with finesse.
