Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2018
95 points, “I don’t think there’s another Sauvignon Blanc out there with the complex array of aromatics and unique flavours offered up by this stellar super Sauv.” – The Tasting Panel Magazine
This is not your average Sauvignon Blanc. Ripened in the Californian sun, entirely fermented in French barrels and matured for six months in oak with biweekly stirring of the lees to impart an opulent and unctuous mouthfeel. There’s mango, pineapple, lime, tangerine, nectarine and grapefruit; heady aromas of orchard blossom, jasmine, honeysuckle, tarragon, kaffir lime and mown grass; the prickle of ginger and gooseberry; and the richness of vanilla ice cream, crème brûlée and butterscotch. Drinking wonderfully now – especially with laksa, roasted sweetcorn, jerk-spiced dishes, beyaynetu or barbequed fish – but it will also continue to improve with bottle age. Prepare yourself to be blown away.
Merry Edwards is one of Sonoma County’s pioneers. As one of California’s very first female winemakers, her illustrious career has spanned five decades, moving from Mt Eden Vineyards to Matanzas Creek, and then on to set up her own enterprise, Merry Edwards Winery. This Russian River Valley Pinot Noir specialist became Certified Sustainable in 2017 and two years later it was purchased by the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Champagne Louis Roederer, Champagne Deutz, Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto Port, Maison Delas in the Rhône and Bordeaux’s iconic Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. When asked about handing over the reins to Frédéric Rouzaud, Merry Edwards said: “I know my legacy is in good hands.”
