Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018
A gymnastic Pinot Noir; power, poise, elegance and tightly coiled energy in perfect control.
Merry Edwards’ Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir comes from six vineyards in the south of the region. And the routine is flawless; filled with drama, intensity and flair. There’s black cherry liqueur, hedgerow blackberries, raspberry jam, rose petals, cranberry, blood orange, salted caramel, leather, charcuterie and a note that reminds us of spiced rum and cola. And it nails the landing. Top marks for this Pinot.
Merry Edwards is one of Sonoma County’s pioneers. As one of California’s very first female winemakers, her illustrious career has spanned five decades, moving from Mt Eden Vineyards to Matanzas Creek, and then on to set up her own enterprise, Merry Edwards Winery. This Russian River Valley Pinot Noir specialist became Certified Sustainable in 2017 and two years later it was purchased by the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful families and owners of Champagne Louis Roederer, Champagne Deutz, Domaines Ott, Ramos Pinto Port, Maison Delas in the Rhône and Bordeaux’s iconic Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. When asked about handing over the reins to Frédéric Rouzaud, Merry Edwards said: “I know my legacy is in good hands.”
