Tasting Notes
Super Tuscan with super pedigree at a super price point…
Michele Satta is one of Bolgheri’s leading producers, which is really saying something considering this village has given the world the likes of Sassicaia and Ornellaia. He established his estate near picturesque Castagneto Carducci in 1983 and was one of the founders of the Bolgheri DOC, while also consulting at the mighty Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. Renowned for his originality – you’ll see his innovative blending shortly – he is both a founding father and a tireless alchemist.
His Bolgheri Rosso is a Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Teroldego (a grape more famous in Trentino in northern Italy), matured in a combination of large, old oak casks and seasoned French barriques for 12 months.
Undeniably Tuscan, this is classic Bolgheri, but without the overcooked jamminess and extortionate price tag that some wines from this region have. Marvellously modern, Michele Satta’s Bolgheri Rosso is plush and evocative of soft red fruit, ripe blackberries, leather, cinnamon, tobacco and green peppercorns, with just a suggestion of holidays in Provence from notes of orange peel, lavender and dried herbs. Serve with herby roasts, wild mushroom pasta, sausage ragu, rich sauces and slow-cooked stews.
