Young Single Malt Triple Cask 500ml
The bustling and humid streets of Tel Aviv may not be the first place you’d think of seeking out premium whisky. But with Israel’s burgeoning cocktail scene and desire for local products, half a dozen new distilleries have opened in recent years. The first was Milk & Honey Whisky Distillery – the coming together of a group of whisky lovers who wanted to create a uniquely Israeli Single Malt.
M&H’s Triple Cask Young Single is delicately peaty with Malted Milk biscuits, dried fruit, a drizzle of honey and a deep complexity derived from the intriguing use of red wine, Bourbon and Islay whisky casks (including some from the likes of Ardbeg and Laphroaig). Don’t be put off by the word “young” in the name, whisky in Tel Aviv ages twice as quickly as it would in Scotland. Don’t just take our word for it, Scotch Whisky Magazine – who have no reason to be partisan about this – wrote: “Yes, that’s fully-matured at three years of age, thanks to Israel’s heat and humidity.” So if you put this up against a 10 or 12-year-old Scotch and you’d be hard pushed to pick the younger.
Established in 2014, Milk & Honey Distillery’s rapid success can be put down to their pride and love of whisky. But they also received a little help from the late Dr. Jim Swan, a man described as “the Einstein of whisky”. Swan has been involved with a raft of great distilleries including Kavalan, Cotswolds, Penderyn, Kilchoman, Victoria Caledonian; and highly respected whisky writer Charles MacLean called him his “first and greatest mentor”.
