Moric – pronounced ‘Moritz’ – Blaufränkisch is a wine of immense finesse, spice, black cherry, olive and cooling mint. A match made in heaven with schnitzel and chive-flecked potato salad, goulash with galuska, or sausage and mash.
According to Eric Asimov in the New York Times, the “freshness, subtlety, salinity and complexity” of Moric Blaufränkisch “made each sip a delicious adventure that kept calling for more” and demonstrates the “innate beauty of [this grape variety] made with elegance in mind”.
Burgenland born and bred, Roland Velich travelled the world for more than a decade learning from all the greatest terroirs on the planet, before returning to his homeland in Austria to concentrate on making biodynamic Blaufränkisch under the Moric label. This grape variety is popular in neighbouring Hungary – where it’s known as Kékfrankos – particularly in the Beaune-like town of Sopron just a half hour drive across the border from the winery. This Burgundy influence permeates Roland’s winemaking; he treats each vineyard as if it were a Grand Cru and focuses on delicacy and poise. This attention to detail has led to his wines, in the words of Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages, achieving “internationally coveted status”.
