Mortlach distillery was nicknamed ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ by whisky critic Dave Broom, because of its robust, muscular, waxy and often meaty character. This is said to come from the unusual technique of distilling the spirit 2.81 times, a process the distillery calls ‘The Way’. Named after the distillery’s famous small spirit still and matured in a combination of ex-Sherry and Bourbon casks for 12 years, The Wee Witchie was unveiled in 2018. It’s a meaty and sulphury melting pot of waxy apples, pears, prunes, damsons, cherry jam, tobacco, burnt toffee, roasted barley, chocolate, ginger, cinnamon, citrus oil and chewy beef jerky.
