Every year since 2001 Diageo has unveiled its Special Releases – a limited-edition series of highly collectable and sought-after Scotch whiskies exploring the breadth and depth of their portfolio. Curated by Diageo’s Master Blender Dr Craig Wilson the 2022 Special Releases collection is entitled ‘Legends Untold Chapter 2’. These cask-strength whiskies take inspiration from the mysterious mythological creatures said to inhabit the lands around the distilleries chosen. The bottles were designed by two illustrators Kevin Tong and Ken Taylor and might well be the most colourful and vivid yet. Each bottle carries a QR code providing the owner access to a “multi-sensory experience” of legends and tales from the distilleries plus innovative cocktail ideas. Fans of Game of Thrones Harry Potter Lord of the Rings and Scotch of course will find much to love here.
Mortlach Special Release 2022 is so good we let out a little hoot on tasting it. Mortlach is famed for its use of Sherry casks which makes this an interesting non-age statement expression because it has been matured in a combination of American oak virgin oak Tawny Port and Red Muscat wine casks. That makes this a bewitching Mortlach the likes of which is seldom tasted. It was inspired by the legend of a blood-red moon which imparted a ruby richness and dark complexity to this here dram. Expect notes of cassoulet merguez pork belly red wine red fruit fiery gingerbread and black pepper. Wise old owls who like their Scotch meaty dark and intriguing are going to want to swoop down and grab this in their talons.
Mortlach distillery was nicknamed ‘The Beast of Dufftown’ by whisky critic Dave Broom because of its robust muscular waxy and often meaty character. This is said to come from the unusual technique of distilling the spirit 2.81 times a process the distillery calls ‘The Way’. Its bold flavour without any smoke made this Speyside whisky an integral component for Johnnie Walker. But now you can enjoy it in its pure and unadulterated beastliness. For anyone looking for oomph and richness without the environmentally problematic use of peat Mortlach is the answer. We recommend enjoying it by moonlight or for Halloween and maybe with a drop or two of water to douse the flames of that 57.8% ABV.
