Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2015
Margaret River’s Moss Wood is a winery whose wines regularly surpass their rivals in California, Bordeaux and Burgundy.
This is only the third vintage of the Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon, yet it feels so assured, like a long-term classic. This vineyard was purchased almost twenty years ago, but the Mugford family has been waiting patiently for the vines to come of age. And here it is. 2015 was a stunning vintage throughout so much of the world and must have been one of Margaret River’s finest. The Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon – with just a splash of Cabernet Franc and Merlot – delivers cassis, mulberries, cedar, new leather jackets, dried herbs, wildflowers and the distant smoke of someone tarring the road far away. It’s exceptional stuff, and it’s not just Harvey Nichols that thinks so:
- 93 points, “Really stylish and suave.” – James Suckling
- 96 points, “Gloriously deep, intense, powerfully structured and profound.” – Huon Hooke
- 96 points, “Ethereal Cabernet Sauvignon in an elegant rather than blockbuster style.” – Bob Campbell MW
Moss Wood, in Wilyabrup, was first planted in 1969. Clare and Keith Mugford took ownership in the 1985 and shortly after the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine bestowed an “exceptional” ranking upon them. For those not familiar with Langton’s, it’s an auction house that created a classification that has become the honour roll of Australia’s top fine wines, judging wineries on the demand in the market over at least a decade, rather than simply relying on one critic’s opinion on a single tasting. Moss Wood’s wines are elegant, stylish and harmonious, making them not just some of Australia’s finest, but significant challengers to the Old World.
