Mountain Tides

Partial Carbonic Petite Sirah 2019

£32.50

“It’s so exciting to discover new producers making serious, kindly priced wines anywhere, but especially in California where they have been relatively rare… Scott Kirkpatrick and Allison Watkins make nothing but revelatory examples of Petite Sirah.” – Jancis Robinson MW

Mountain Tides is part of a new wave of Californian producers looking beyond the omnipresent Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Instead, they concentrate on an underrated grape called Petite Sirah (aka Durif), which is usually used in blends. However, in expert hands and allowed to take centre stage, it’s a thing of beauty.

Inspired by the Crus of Beaujolais, this is a joyfully juicy red. Always Mountain Tides’ most popular and fastest selling wine (the winery normally sells out within six weeks of release), it’s made from Petite Sirah grapes that are picked early and undergo carbonic maceration (the process famously used in Beaujolais). Pull the cork to discover a summery red that’s seemingly packed with sunbeams and good times. Expect tart cranberry, juicy cherry, tangy raspberry, red plums, crunchy energy and lots of fun. We adore Mountain Tides Partial Carbonic Petite Sirah served lightly chilled in the sunshine or with a barbeque.

Scott Kirkpatrick and Allison Watkins met in 2014. Their lives were changed forever when an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 hit Napa. They came away unscathed, but it altered their view of the land beneath their feet. Scott makes the wines and Allison is a photographer (and responsible for the stunning labels), together they are creating wines that represent a snapshot in time of the Petite Sirah grow on the ever-moving hills of the lesser-known areas of California.
