Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 2012 - MUSELLA

Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 2012

94 points, “The Musella Amarone is all about beautiful harmony and flow… It's not super-concentrated or heavy, nor oaky; instead it's open and friendly with plenty of juicy, bright cherry and rose flavours and aromas: more Burgundian in weight and texture, with expressive notes of sweet spice, tobacco, smoke and cherry.” – Decanter Magazine

Quite possibly one of the finest Amarone della Valpolicella Riservas we’ve ever come across. Winemaker Maddalena Pasqua di Bisceglie let slip that 2012 was the first year the family felt that their biodynamic vines found their true expression. The results are staggering. It has been crafted by fermenting Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes that were dried in the naturally ventilated hayloft above the old stables. The grapes lose 35% of their original weight, concentrating all the flavour, sugars and tannins. Miraculously, the wine remains fresh and elegant – imagine Burgundy crossed with Tawny Port. Pair this remarkable wine – redolent with cherry jam, cinnamon, vanilla, plum, rose petal and red liquorice – with a sausage, chestnut and fennel seed pasta, pink duck or maybe a slow-cooked and spicy stew.

Musella create the kind of showstopping reds that our buyers stock their houses with over the festive period and for special occasions. Located just outside Verona in San Martino Buon Albergo, this estate is a biodynamic paradise surrounded by rolling meadows, woods, olive groves, fruit trees, nature reserves and three hills of vineyards (Monte del Drago, Perlar and Palazzina), each one of the latter adding a new dimension and more complexity to their wines. Over the last twenty years Musella has risen to prominence and now sets the benchmark for the entire region, in no small part due to the direction that Maddalena Pasqua di Bisceglie has steered them in. Truly fabulous and still on the rise with every vintage.
