Yoichi Apple Brandy Wood Finish 2020 Single Malt Japanese Whisky
A highly collectable release from one of Japan’s rarer distilleries. This lightly peated Yoichi whisky was bottled in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the wedding of Masataka and Rita Taketsuru. Mr Taketsuru was the founder of Nikka Whisky, and Rita – born Jessie Roberta Cowan – was the Scottish lady who fell in love with her brother’s judo instructor and then helped him fulfil his dream of “making real whisky in Japan”.
This intriguing whisky, made in their honour, has been finished in ex-apple brandy casks. Apple brandy was chosen because while Masataka and Rita waited for the first whiskies to mature, they produced apple juices and jams to make ends meet. Strictly a limited edition, we secured just a handful, so act quickly if you wish to own one. And don’t forget the partner release from the stunning Miyagikyo distillery.
Hailing from Japan’s northernmost prefecture, the island of Hokkaido, Yoichi Apple Brandy Wood Finish is a Single Malt with a mellow peat smoke reminiscent of the warming glow of a bonfire. This flavour flows alongside apple pie, baked apples, poached pear, malted milk biscuits, boiled sweets, Cuban cigars, dates and baklava.
Built in 1934 Yoichi was Nikka’s first distillery. Masataka Taketsuru chose the position in Hokkaido due to its similarities to Scotland. Gently peated, Yoichi displays delicate smoke and sea spray nuances because of its proximity to the sea. These rare releases are a must-have for any serious Japanese whisky aficionado or collector.
