Nordic Akevitt Blank 500ml
Forget marauding Vikings, modern Norway is all Scandi chic, a bit of Jante Law and lots of nyttevekst (foraging), as this stylish and modest unaged akevitt made from locally sourced botanicals proves.
In 1927 the State Monopoly took control of Norway’s last operational distillery, ending a long tradition of local and independent distilling. Since 2015 Oslo Håndverksdestilleri have been working to resurrect those customs. Head Distiller Matt McMillan learned his trade at Breckenridge in the Rocky Mountains, the world’s highest distillery, so he has adapted easily to the cold Norwegian winters and fallen in love with the outdoors. With fjords and forests on their doorstep, this is made from nine locally harvested herbs and spices: caraway, meadowsweet, heather flower, angelica root, juniper berry, sorrel, calamus root, chamomile flower and St. John's wort.
Aquavit is super niche, but this is an excellent gateway into the category as it tastes like a Nordic take on gin. Serve alongside cured fish, cucumber salad or game sausages with lingonberry jam. Sip it neat, with tonic and a slice of cucumber and grapefruit, or swap it into your favourite gin-based cocktail. Skål! That’s cheers in Norwegian.
