20 points “Delivers absolutely everything you want from Grange: the fruit is knee-weakeningly gorgeous the oak fits in beautifully and there's endless length that gives a thoughtful engaging aftertaste.” – Richard Hemming MW for Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages

98 points “A quite magnificent wine and a great Grange.” – Huon Hooke

97 points “Shows superb clarity and spicy lift to its spice-laced bitter cherry cassis blueberry and floral pastille flavours which take on black cardamom menthol and cola nuances as the wine slowly stretches out.” – Antonio Galloni’s Vinous Media

96 points “Full-bodied ripe and almost decadently creamy in the mouth it’s loaded with substance concentrated and rich yet – in the context of Grange – relatively light and elegant-seeming on the finish.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

For its 70th anniversary year this grange had to be something special and it is. For only the seventh time in its history Grange 2017 is a pure Shiraz with grapes coming from Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Matured in new American oak hogsheads for 18 months it fully deserves its perfect score from Richard Hemming MW because this multi-vineyard and multi-regional blend is a stunner. Explosive blackberry crème de cassis plum crumble cherry and blueberry fruits are joined by notes of vanilla coconut Nutella tobacco cardamom mint cola creamy coffee black olive tapenade dark chocolate cedar and the smoke of burning marshmallows creating an intriguing dark and brooding red that will improve for decades to come.

Penfolds is certainly Australia’s and possibly one of the world’s most iconic wine producers. Established in 1844 it boasts an enviable history that most wineries in the Old World would give their right arm for. Most famous for its flagship wine Penfolds Grange which is the very definition of Australian fine wine and the 1955 vintage was even described by Wine Spectator as one of the “Wines of the Century”. Penfolds owe much of their success to Max Schubert their winemaker who travelled to Europe after World War II and came back with all kinds of secrets. His innovative often multi-regional blends have become part of the DNA of Penfolds and now the wines are the choice of connoisseurs and collectors all over the world.
