PSI Ribera del Duero 2016
“Probably the finest vintage of PSI – finer, longer and sharply focussed. According to Sisseck, this is the PSI he always dreamed about.” – Wine Advocate
Named after the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet, which looks remarkably like an old vine, PSI is a smooth, fresh and elegant Tempranillo (with a splash of Grenache), and probably the very best to date. 2016 was an incredible vintage in the Ribera del Duero, alongside 2010 it’s the region’s greatest according to Wine Advocate. So this is a juicy red that is not to be missed.
Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck’s Pingus revolutionised Spanish wine, placing it right up there alongside the Super Tuscans and Bordeaux’s First Growths. Before it, Ribera del Duero was known for little more than mass-produced reds, Vega Sicilia being the only notable exception. But Pingus changed all of that, shooting to fame in 1995 when Robert Parker described the Grand Vin as probably “the greatest young red wine I have ever tasted from Spain.” A huge proportion of the 325 cases of that vintage were lost when a ship carrying them to the US sank near the Azores. This rocketed the demand for what remained into the stratosphere, and the rest – as they say – is history. The cult Pingus is seen by many as the pinnacle of what can be achieved with Tempranillo and as a result ends up hogging much of the limelight, however, PSI is a grander and far nobler vision.
Having set the benchmark for Ribera del Duero’s reds, Peter Sisseck decided to try and raise the bar for everyone in the region that welcomed him so warmly, by creating the side project PSI in 2007. The newest edition to the Dominio de Pingus stable, PSI uses surplus Tempranillo fruit gathered from old vines throughout the region, which have been grown by locals who lack the means to make their own wines. Sisseck works with these growers, encouraging organic and biodynamic farming methods, to help improve the soil quality and the standard for all. These grapes would have otherwise gone to waste, so the sustainable PSI helps to protect not just the precious old vines, but the very soul of Ribera del Duero. In 2016, Sisseck was able to ferment 100% of the grapes for PSI at his own winery for the first time, which probably goes a long way to explaining why this year’s is so good.
