Brunello di Montalcino 2015
2015 was sensational for Brunello di Montalcino. Described by Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media as “the vintage we’ve been waiting for” and by Italian wine expert James Suckling as a “fairy-tale vintage” and “a historical year for Brunello di Montalcino that nobody should miss”. So, don’t sleep on the new wines coming out now…
Intense and complex, this classic and long-aged Sangiovese is a dark affair displaying black cherry, woody spices, plum liqueur, dried currants, coffee beans, leathery cocoa, graphite and rich tannins. Matured in a combination of large Slavonian and smaller French barrels; what emerges after three years in oak and six months in bottle is a surprisingly bright and aromatic red that we love to serve with game, wild mushrooms, truffles, chestnut stews and slow-cooked ragù. It has a long life ahead of it, so it might be worth popping an extra bottle into the cellar.
Although only tiny, Tuscany’s Pietroso has been famous since the 14th Century. Today it’s run by Gianni Pignattai and his family. When his uncle, Domenico Berni, started making wine here in the 1970s, it was just half a hectare and widely acknowledged to be the smallest estate in Montalcino. Still only five hectares today – a hectare being about a football pitch – they make old-school, but extremely elegant, Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino, which they age in the garage beneath their home. What dumbfounds us, is the value for money and attention to detail you’ll find at Azienda Agricola Pietroso.
