Crafted at the Black Friars Distillery, one of the country’s oldest distilleries housed in an ancient monastery built in the 1400s, Plymouth Gin is blended with crystal-clear Dartmoor water and was the worthy winner of a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2016. Full-bodied, creamy, tangy and richly peppery, it’s a traditional gin that no collection should be without.
Plymouth Gin used to have a Protected Geographical Indication, but they waived this in 2015 because they were unwilling to give up the secret recipe to the powers that be. And when it tastes this comfortingly classic, you can see why them might want to keep it a confidential.
It makes a gin and tonic that tastes exactly as a good gin and tonic should, but we also love it in a peppery Martini, especially if you give it a maritime twist by replacing the vermouth with Manzanilla. Plymouth Gin is incredibly versatile, able to excel in any cocktail you throw at it. Alternatively, if you fancy a naughty and nautical celebratory beverage, why not try a Mahogany – a old-school sailor’s tipple made by beating two parts of Plymouth Gin into one part of warmed black treacle.
