The POP mini bottles were invented on the eve of the Great Depression of 1929. Melchior de Polignac, the son of Louise Pommery, was a keen hunter and wanted a smaller size that he could easily transport. This radical thinking helped the Pommery brand weather the storm of the economic turmoil and become the world-famous force it is today.
Originally established as a wool trading company called Pommery & Greno in 1858, this business took a dramatic change of direction when its founder Alexandre Louis Pommery died, and his widow Louise took over. Now, Pommery is one of the biggest names in Champagne, and it deserves a special place in the region’s history as Madame Pommery created the first Brut Champagne in 1874. This ground-breaking wine changed the prevailing preference for sweeter Champagne and would go on to become the world’s most popular style. The avant-garde Champagne house, with its turrets, towers, crenelations, red bricks and blue façade, is every bit as bright and striking as the wines produced within its walls.
