Maias Tinto 2017 - QUINTA DAS MAIAS

Maias Tinto 2017

Crunchy, organic and crazy-good value. Maias Tinto is pure summer in a glass.

When it comes to Portuguese wine, many compare the chunky wines of Douro to Bordeaux, and the more elegant reds of Dão (where this wine comes from) to Burgundy. This is probably fair, but when it comes to Quinta das Maias, with its high altitude and granite soils, think more Beaujolais than Côte d’Or. Crafted from Jaen (known as Mencía in Bierzo, Spain) grapes and a mixture of other regional favourites, it’s fresh, crisp and vegan friendly. Soft, succulent red fruit, crème de cassis, a splash of cream, savoury dried herbs and a deeply refreshing acidity; we love this slightly chilled with barbeques, light lunches and Mediterranean or Middle Eastern fare.

Maias is the local name for a plant called Spartium, also known as Weaver’s Broom, which grows prolifically around the estate and erupts into bright yellow flowers in May.
