This very traditional Vintage Port comes from an outstanding year and has a long life ahead of it with critics already predicting a longevity of 3-4 decades. Foot trodden and fermented with all the stems to create a dense powerful old-school style; it pulses with blackberry blueberry strawberry jam Kalamata olive rhubarb crumble Earl Grey tea crushed slate and a combination of chocolate spices toasted seeds and warmth that’s reminiscent of Oaxacan mole. We’d recommend pairing this aromatic Port with cheese chocolate desserts and Christmas fare and also picking up another bottle to lose in your cellar for a while.

The yields in 2017 for Port were very low but the quality of the wine was immensely high. According to Wine Advocate they offer “old-school power concentration freshness lifted fruit and vivid flavours. The only vintage in the last decade that competes with it is 2011.” This is high praise considering that 2011 is the highest rated year ever for Vintage Port according to Wine Advocate. It’s that freshness that makes this such a great vintage and explains why so much of it was snapped up immediately during a hard-fought En Primeur campaign. Demand for what remains will be high.

Ramos Pinto is a name to be reckoned with. Firstly they are owned by the Rouzauds – one of the wine world’s most powerful and discerning families who also look after Champagne Louis Roederer Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Domaines Ott Maison Delas and Champagne Deutz. Secondly they were founded back in 1880 and played a leading role in defining the best grape varieties for the whole Douro Valley.
