Classic Cuvée Brut English Sparkling Wine 2016

£30.00

“Tastes like a slice of fresh-baked Victoria sponge piled with thin segments of blood orange and raspberries. And a spicy dustiness: icing sugar and baobab fruit and sumac and pink peppercorns.” – JancisRobinson.com

“A Bolly-shaped sparkler…there is a heady perfume and an apple and cinnamon compote theme here which is rather alluring.” – Matthew Jukes

“This is pure and focussed. It’s all about fruit, with precision and intensity. Zesty, citrussy, with hints of cherries and pear fruit.” – Dr Jamie Goode, WineAnorak.com

The inaugural vintage of Rathfinny’s Classic Cuvée sets a new standard for Sussex Sparkling. And any fans of that rich, savoury Bollinger style should take note of what’s happening on this side of the Channel.

Rathfinny Wine Estate is the most audacious and exciting new player on the English wine scene. Crafted using 57% Pinot Noir, 22% Chardonnay and 21% Pinot Meunier, their Classic Cuvée is aged on the lees for an impressive 36 months. Bustling with red apples, tangerines, honeydew melons, buttered rye bread with a pinch of sea salt, raspberry sorbet, peppery spices, cherries and blossom, this is a rich, creamy and rambunctious fizz. At such an accessible price for English Sparkling Wine, this can be used to celebrate for no reason at all. Alternatively, serve it alongside truffle risotto, wild mushrooms, fish pie, cheesy arancini, crispy duck pancakes with plum sauce, apple pie or lemon posset.

Rathfinny Wine Estate has around 90 hectares of vines on Sussex’s South Downs between Brighton and Eastbourne. This ambitious new venture – the first vines were planted on the chalk soils behind the Seven Sisters in 2012 – is set to be 140 hectares when at full capacity, making it one of England’s most significant vineyards. Set up by Mark and Sarah Driver – former hedge fund manager and solicitor respectively – and employing a winemaker from Champagne and a vineyard manager from New Zealand, Rathfinny will undoubtedly set the benchmark for English Sparkling Wine.
