27 Year Old Cask Ruby Port Cask Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

£460.00

Introducing the oldest permanent member of the Redbreast family, this 27 Year Old has been crafted using Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey components that have been triple distilled and matured in Bourbon (first-fill and refill), Oloroso Sherry and Ruby Port casks for almost three decades. Bottled at cask strength and filled into a glamorous red bottle, this whiskey has sold out rapidly almost everywhere after news slipped out that it will only be made in small quantities from time to time.

Where most distillers might have opted to “finish” the whiskey in Port pipes, Redbreast (who always go the extra mile) chose to fully mature a portion in them for 27 years, while still maintaining the Sherry influence that has made it such a popular brand. Bearing in mind that Whisky Advocate has awarded the 12, 21 and 25-year-olds all 96 points, we expect big things from this release when the critics eventually get their hands on it. Maybe that should be ‘IF’ (a big if) they can get their hands on it!

The first sip is like tumbling into the fruit stand at the greengrocer; mango, pineapple, banana, orange, cherry, strawberry, plums, red apples, blackcurrants, peaches, cranberries and more. In falling head over heels, you try to steady yourself by grabbing a nearby shelf, which also comes crashing down on top of you bringing with it all the spices. Suddenly, there’s chilli, herbs, pepper, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, walnuts, raisins and jar or two of runny honey in the mix too. It’s astounding, if this doesn’t end up in the list of whiskeys of the year we’ll be mortified.

Redbreast is a living legend of the Irish whiskey scene. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley that’s triple-distilled in a traditional copper pot still, it first appeared in 1912 when Gilbeys began selling a whiskey distilled by Jameson’s that they had matured for 12 years. Although production ceased in 1985, it was soon re-launched due to popular demand and is now better than ever.
