Blanc de Noirs London Sparkling Wine 2016

£100.00

Tasting like sparkling Grand Cru Chablis combined with the richest of apple pies, this limited-edition Blanc de Noirs London Sparkling 2016 is nothing short of monumental. The greatest English Sparkling Wine ever made? Quite possibly, yes!

Crafted using hand-picked Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes grown in Suffolk. The whole bunches were gently fed through a 100-litre wooden basket press and the juice underwent its primary fermentation in French oak barrels that had previously held Chardonnay in Burgundy. Regular stirring by hand and by shaking caused by the trainline overhead added oodles of richness and oaky complexity. The wine was then filled by hand into just 800 bottles. The second fermentation, which gives it the bubbles and the yeasty pastry flavours, took place in the peaceful crypt of Christ Church, Spitalfields – an iconic building designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in the 1700s that now finds itself wedged between the hubbub of Liverpool Street and Brick Lane.

Many will compare Renegade Urban Winery’s Blanc de Noirs London Sparkling 2016 to Champagne, but we think it’s a true standalone original that must be tasted to be believed. Also, although it may be controversial to say it, we’re not sure we’ve come across a Champagne in recent years that can hold a candle to it.

After visiting vineyards and urban wineries around the globe, Warwick Smith was inspired to launch the capital’s second winery, Renegade. His top-quality fruit is sourced from small growers around Europe and is transported to London in refrigerated trucks before being lovingly pressed by hand and foot beneath the train tracks in Bethnal Green, London. As Renegade put it, urban wineries are “breaking the rules one bottle at a time”, making them one of the most exciting things to happen to the industry in a very long time. For that reason, any true wine lover or appreciator of artisanal products needs to be all over the urban winery scene.
