In 1958 Riedel launched the very first ‘wine-friendly’ glasses with the Sommeliers Series, which were blown into a mould by glassblowers in Tyrol. They are still one of the most iconic glasses on the market today. The Superleggero Series uses the same technique and shape as the Sommeliers Series, but it’s lead free (hence tougher) and features a slimmer aesthetic, making them super light. These hand-formed glasses are simply brilliant, bringing the wine drinker closer to the wine than ever before.
The design of the Superleggero Oaked Chardonnay glass is perfect to unleash the intensity of full-bodied white wines. The large volume and wide mouth of the bowl develops the rich bouquet and prevents the wine seeming overconcentrated. The result is a drinking experience of exquisite balance. Although intended specifically for oaked Chardonnay, we also find it works beautifully with dry late harvest Riesling, big Rhône and Rioja whites, and oaky Chenin Blanc and Semillon.
In celebration of the company’s 265th anniversary, Riedel has created some limited-edition value packs containing a pair of Superleggero Oaked Chardonnay glasses. And they are great value, because the second glass is effectively one-third the normal price.
