Ron Abuelo 12 Year Old is a Panamanian rum made using their own sugarcane. It takes a year for the sugarcane to grow before it can be harvested, the molasses then has to be fermented, before being distilled though a column still. The spirit is then matured in ex-Bourbon barrels, which imparts a wonderful vanilla sweetness. After 12 years, it’s bottled, although 8% will have been lost to the Panamanian climate, also known as the angels’ share. Expect notes of dried fruit, prune, vanilla, tobacco, cocoa-dusted chocolate truffles, toasted oak and roasted nuts, with a rich, rounded and voluptuous feel.

This exquisite rum is made by Varela Hermanos, a company whose history can be traced back to 1908, when a Spanish immigrant built a sugar mill in the village of Pesé, Panama. Growing their own cane, they control every aspect of Ron Abuelo’s production from sugar to sip. Varela Hermanos is also socially and environmentally conscious; it has built a vocational institute to teach welding, sewing, computing and electrician skills to locals, and they harvest manually to reduce carbon emissions, convert fibrous waste sugar cane into biofuel and bottle in recycled glass.
