12 Year Old Two Oaks Rum

Don’t believe the name, you don’t have to be a grandfather to enjoy Ron Abuelo. This 12 Year Old Panamanian rum has been matured in two different types of oak cask. More than a decade is spent in ex-Bourbon barrels, following which the rum is transferred for the finishing spell in extra-charred virgin American oak. What emerges is rich and smoky, with notes of toasted oak, vanilla, roasted coffee, caramelised almonds, kola nuts, molasses, cloves, gingerbread and barbeques. Sipping this smoky rum neat, it isn’t hard to see why Ron Abuelo is regularly recommended by Cigar Aficionado. This exquisite rum is made by Varela Hermanos, a company whose history can be traced back to 1908, when a Spanish immigrant built a sugar mill in the village of Pesé, Panama. Growing their own cane, they control every aspect of Ron Abuelo’s production from sugar to sip. Varela Hermanos is also socially and environmentally conscious; it has built a vocational institute to teach welding, sewing, computing and electrician skills to locals, and they harvest manually to reduce carbon emissions, convert fibrous waste sugar cane into biofuel and bottle in recycled glass.
